iGii Research Roundup – January 2026

News & Blogs

Welcome to iGii’s Research Roundup series.

In this series, we provide brief updates on the latest academic research across the world making use of our sustainable carbon nanomaterial, Gii.

Here we explore the potential of Gii in an electrochemical biosensor for low limits of detection of Alzheimer Disease biomarkers.

What is it?

The researchers at the University of Plymouth optimised their electrochemical biosensors for enhanced sensitivity and reliability testing for Alzheimer’s Disease biomarkers in blood.

Why does it matter?

Alzheimer’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that increases in prevalence with age. It is a form of dementia and is characterised by the progressive decline of cognitive function that can lead to difficulties carrying out daily tasks.

Whilst there is currently no cure available, early diagnosis can impact the onset and progression of the disease with treatment management and support.

The innovation opens the door for rapid disease detection with high sensitivity and reproducibility in human serum. Further optimisation and future implementation of the innovation can further support disease prevention and the establishment of treatment protocols early on to enable people to live fuller and longer lives.

In this edition of iGii’s Research Roundup, we explored the integration of Gii for early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease, this is not the only application Gii can be used for.

We are always looking to partner with research teams to explore the endless applications of Gii, from sensing and detection to microheaters to printed primary batteries and more.
